Clubs: I have asked the fleet captains for each of our clubs to tell us a little bit about what is going on in their local clubs this summer. Last month we heard about the great group up in Edina. This month, Jeff Weaver, the fleet captain for the Ann Arbor Model Yacht Club fills us in on the racing scene there. Rick Moynahan also sent in some race results from an event held over the weekend in Bakersfield. If you have a group or a club that is sailing on a regular basis and you would like to have your news included in the class newsletter, please feel free to send me an email letting me know what is going on in your neck of the woods. Ann Arbor model Yacht Club:
We are proud to be hosting the first ever Fairwind National Championship on September 28th and 29th at Gallup Park in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Hopefully you’ll be out there with us participating in this inaugural event. If you haven’t sent your application yet to Will Gorgen, please do so soon. This is the first year that the Fairwind has been recognized as a One-Design Class by the AMYA, and coincidently this is the first year that the Ann Arbor MYC has had an organized Fairwind fleet. Historically the club has been primarily a One Meter fleet. In recent years the membership has waned. Last year there weren’t any organized fleets within the club. The club was about an equal mix of One Meters, Victoria’s, and Fairwinds. Towards the end of the season last year, it appeared that the Victoria’s might emerge as the predominant class. But the participation by the Vic’s never took off. Last year there were only three Fairwind boats in the club, but this year it’s been a different story. We’ve had tremendous growth in the club this year, and the new members have been primarily new Fairwind owners. We started the season with five boats, and the fleet has steadily grown this season to ten Fairwinds. The most recent Fairwind is still under construction by our newest member Joel. Hopefully he’ll have it completed in time for the Nationals. The Fairwind fleet is now the largest in the club, and even some of the past One Meter sailors are starting to make the switch over to the Fairwind. The growth could be attributed to a number of factors, but having the Fairwind Class Secretary as a member of your club certainly helps! ;-} Our club does not meet quite as often as some of the other clubs do. We get together about once every three or four weeks. This year we had 9 outings scheduled but the first one in April was cancelled due to snow. At each outing, the fleet sails six races that count towards the season standings, and then we’ll add in a few extra fun races if time permits. For the season standings we allow 25% of the races to be thrown out, this allows a sailor that can’t attend every single outing to still remain competitive for the season. As the fleet has grown this season so has the competition. I guess it’s fitting that in the inaugural season as a One-Design Class, our Class Secretary, Will Gorgen has been in first place for the entire season. He dominated the first three outings and nobody has been able to catch him since. With only three outings remaining, it is not likely that he’ll be surrendering first place ;-> At the start of the season, Will knocked the dust off one of his old sailing trophies in his basement and generously donated it to our club to serve as the perpetual championship trophy for the Fairwind fleet. It’s looking like it’ll be collecting dust in his basement again. ;-] Congratulations on a great first season Will. You’ve been a great Class Secretary and a great competitor. Hope to see ya all out at the first Fairwind National Championship on September 28th.
